Maritime festival returning to Richmond Aug. 12 and 13
Richmond will revel in its nautical history
when the 14th annual Richmond Maritime Festival returns to Steveston Aug. 12
and 13.
The spectacular Steveston waterfront will be
replete with a wooden boat festival within the site, that will also feature
roving characters, visual artists, puppets and storytellers. Festival-goers
will also be treated to performances on multiple stages, including an early
Saturday evening A variety of performers will be on stage throughout the
weekend including an early Saturday evening performance concert by local
favourite Good for Grapes.
“The Richmond Maritime Festival has become
one of the highlights of the summer in our community,” said Mayor Malcolm
Brodie. “It’s full of fun for the whole family with surprises around every corner.
It is also an engaging celebration of the fishing and other maritime industries
that helped build Richmond and B.C. This year, we’re expanding the festival’s
focus on the wooden boats that have played such a vital part in the history of
Richmond and all of the B.C. West Coast.”
Expanded in honour of Canada’s 150th
birthday, this year’s festival will also feature a variety of maritime-themed
activities including log rolling demonstrations and ship-viewing opportunities.
There will also be a fleet of food trucks on site to satisfy any appetite.
This year the Richmond Maritime Festival
poster was designed by McNair Secondary School student Atheana Picha. Picha is
a talented local artist that festival organizers are proud to have on the team.
The Richmond Maritime Festival will run from11
a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug.12 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13.

The Richmond Maritime Festival is produced by
the City of Richmond and presented by the Port of Vancouver. The festival is
made possible thanks to the support of Canadian Heritage. The main stage of the
event is sponsored by Canadian Western Bank. The community sponsors are Fraser
Surrey Docks and the Fraser River Industrial Association. Event partners are
the Richmond Arts Coalition and Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society.
The festival is part of Richmond Canada 150,
a year-long program of events and activities.
